Back to Back

This week’s missive is a whopper with lots of news and results to catch up on.

Pro Am 2026

This year’s HGC Pro Am takes place on Sat 11th July. We still have some morning team spaces available so please contact me to find out more. It’s open to men and ladies and the feedback from those that play is always super positive.

Masters Sweepstake

Well done to Rory at the Masters and just as importantly CJ Brown who managed to get him in the sweepstake!

Junior F9 Stableford (Sun 12/4/26)

Congrats to Cam Smurthwaite for recording 19 points in poor weather conditions to beat Ollie Lynch on countback.

Spring Stableford (Sat 11/4/26)

Well on Saturday we introduced divisions in to the men’s comps for the first time. Division 1 is for 0-18 handicaps and Division 2 is for 19+ handicaps.

In Div 1, Gary Beal won with 35 points and Freddie Fallows was second with the same score.

And in Div 2, Mark Haywood also won with 35 points and Seb Butterworth was second just one point adrift. Special mention to Ivor Davies who also recorded 35 points but wasn’t eligible to pick up a prize as he hasn’t yet played the requisite number of comps.

Nine & Dine (Fri 10/4/26)

The winners of this fun team event were Ann & Garrett Coulson and Mark & Helen William’s.  In joint second and not even countback could seperate them, we have Mike Thompson, Rob Manley, Kathleen McNairney and Rowena Allen and Gill & Andrew Kay, Rosie Gerrard & Dave Smith.

Ladies Max Score Medals (Thu 9/4/26)

The F9 max medal was won by Pat Jefferies with a nett 35 and Jane Wilkinson was the runner up with a nett 34.

In the 18 hole event, Rachel McDowell won with a nett 70 and Jo Bates was one shot behind to finish second.

Trip to Enville (7-8th April 2026)

We had a wonderful trip to Enville GC in Shropshire last week for two rounds of golf and an overnight stay in the nearby Red Lion pub. There was myself and 15 HGC members in attendance and it was wall to wall sunshine.

The winners of the best two from four competition on day one were Johnny Yates, Chris Brown, Roger Sheen & Al Kenney with 76 points. On day two, it was Johnny Yates (again – well done JY!), Sally Budd, Jane Wilkinson & Vicky Chamberlain with an excellent 89 point tally.

Frolic (Mon 6/4/26)

Looks like the Coulsons have the hang of team golf with another win, this time at the Frolic. On this occassion, they were joined by Tony & Fran Adamson and scored 41 points to win. In seond place were Gillian & Eric Healey, Mary & David Cockbain who were beaten on a CPO.

Archie Preston Mixed Foursomes InterClub Knockout

Unfortuanely we lost this away match at Chapel-en-le-Frith GC by 4:3 on Sat 4th April.

Ladies (Thu 2/4/26)

Noelle Morris romped home with 42 points to win the 18 hole stableford. Fiona Webster was second with 36 points.

In the F9 stableford, Sally Wright, Michelle Rea, Jane Perks – all scored 17 points but Sally won on countback.

Pro Shop Indoor Winter League Final (Thu 2/4/26)

Ollie Grieves & John Book won on the 1st play off hole beating Bob Siddle & Peter Wolfenden. It was their second consecutive win in this event. Well done!

Drive In (Sat 28/3/26)

As has become tradition, there was a nine hole Texas Scramble shotgun competition before the Captains’ Drive in.

The winners were Mike Kirchin, Steve Bates, Paul Allen & Helen Williams with a gross 35. Second place went to Chris Adams, Chris Ravenscroft, John Stevenson & Kate Webster with a gross 37 after a CPO meaning Ian Goulty, Jan Ravenscroft, William Wrigley & Kate Morris were third.

The Drive In went successfully but probably safe to say that the cumulative distance of the three drives wasn’t the longest ever recorded! However we raised £215 for Moya Cole, Helen’s charity for her time in office, via the sweepstake. Thanks to everyone who took part.

Ladies (Thu 26/3/26)

A tree blew down so the 4th / 13th hole was closed for the competitions on this day.

So in the F8 stableford, Orla Weir beat Nicola Kitching following a card play off after both players had scored 17 points.

In the 16 hole stableford, Kairen Seaton won with a very good score of 36 points. In second place was Noelle Morris with 31 points.

The Last Tea

I attach some photos from Ladies tea tonight which may be of use for your next newsletter.

Thanks to Wendy Jenkins for sending me the info below:

It was Lady Captain Vicky Chamberlain’s last tea. She commented on what a wonderful year she has had and thanked the Ladies Section, and particularly her Committee, for all their support: she is pictured with committee members Sally Budd, Noelle Morris, Jane Wilkinson, Pauline Keeling and Amanda Greaves.

Lady Captain was delighted to present a cheque for £5,250 to her chosen charity, Macclesfield Samaritans and thanked all club members for their generous contributions.

Drive In Approaching

Welcome to this week’s newsletter. We have lots of results to review and lots more to look forward to – starting with the Drive In on Saturday and the Masters on the 9th April.

Drive In

As per the last couple of years, we are running a sweepstake to guess the cumulative distance of the three drives (gents captain Mike Thompson, ladies captain Helen Davies and junior captain Ollie Lynch).

The price to enter is £5 and that money is split 50:50. Half goes to the lady captain’s charity, which is Moya Cole and the other half goes into the pot to the winner who’s closest to the actual distance. The prize will be in Pro Shop credit.

So please let me know if you’d like to have a go. The distances range from 350 – 700 yards in one yard increments. You can pay using pro shop credit or club card credit. Thank you.

25 & Unders vs the Over 25s Match (Sun 22/3/26)

The oldies won 5.5 to 4.5 as 40 players took to the course. The format was nine holes fourball betterball matchplay and great fun was had by everyone. We’re hoping to make this an annual fixture.

Well done to Garrett Coulson for winning the Bogey Final with a cracing score of 5 up. Andy Gething was the runner up with 2up beating Paul Bramwell on a card play off.

The Mawson Trophy was also presented to Ade Kershaw. This is for the best eclectic score of the Summer and Winter comps 2025/26. Ade won with a nett 44!

Ladies Medals (Thu 19/3/26)

President Jane Perks won this 9 hole max medal with an impressive nett 33. Rosie Gerrard was second with a nett 35. In the 18 hole event, Noelle Morris was clearly on fire to shot a nett 66. Ann Coulson was the runner up with a nett 73.

Seniors Texas Scramble (Wed 18/3/26)

Chris Ravenscroft, Ade Kershaw & Peter Atherton were the winners of the Texas Scramble with 25 points. Gents captain Glyn Isaac, John Kennedy & Adam Hyde secured second place with 23 points by beating Mike Kirchin, Mike Wells & Bill Harvey on countback.

Bogey 6 (Fri 13th & Sat 14th March)

Ian Powell’s winter training programme of using the studio with CJ Brown clearly paid off as he won Bogey 6 with a fine score of 6 up. Mark Williams was runner up with 2 up and again Paul Bramwell was beaten into third place following a card play off. Unlucky but very consistent golf Paul.

Ladies Comps (Thu 12th March)

Kairen Seaton won the 18 hole stableford in pretty foul weather with 26 ponts. Helen Williams was the runner up with 25 points.

With the nine holers, Judith Guest prevailed with a fine score of 21 points. Jan Ravenscroft was second with 18 points.

Lady Captain’s Dinner (Thu 12/3/26)

A picture of the choir from 10 days ago. The concert went well supported by HGC members, friends, family of the choir as well as some volunteers. A great evening was had by all and the proceeds went to Macclesfield Samaritans. Well done to LC Vicky Chamberlain for organising the event.

Over 25s vs 25 & Unders

Would you like to represent your age group in a match between members of HGC? One team will be the ages 25 and under and the other team will be the over 25s.

It will be played over nine holes with tee times from 1300 – 1500 on Sunday 22nd March 2026. The format will be fourball betterball matchplay. It will be played from the yellow or red tees depending on which is more appropriate for each particular fourball. The ideal fourball would be one junior and a young adult member (aged 18-25) vs two members over the age of 25.

This is something new and a little different. It will provide all players the opportunity to get to know different generations in a fun & friendly matchplay format.

It will be open to players with & without handicaps and also to non members (if they are the parent / grandparent of a junior member). We will make sure that players skill levels are matched appropriately with the faster players teeing off earlier. If the event is oversubscribed, club members will take priority,

There will be an opportunity to grab an informal bite to eat after play with your playing partners, which should ensure a nice buzz to the clubhouse during the afternoon. Menu options will be sent out at a later date.

Please contact me if you’d like to play.

We received this thank you note recently from the RBL. Well done to everyone who contributed.

Gents Team Polos

Please contact myself or Ted Shaw if you missed out last year and would like to get yourself a team polo as per the photo below. Here’s a link for more details including a size guide. It will have the HGC crest on the left chest and the price is £50.
